As summer winds down and the chill of fall creeps in, the Jasper Film Club is gearing up for another season, showcasing some of the best Canadian and international films of the year.
The Dressmaker • Chaba Theatre • 7pm • $10
This season starts Oct. 13 at the Chaba Theatre with the Australian film, The Dressmaker, a comedic drama set in the Australian Outback in the 1950s.
The film tells the story of Tilly Dunnage, a beautiful and talented dressmaker.
At the tender age of 10, Tilly was exiled from her backwater Australian town for an alleged unspeakable act. However, after years of working as a successful fashionista in the haute-couture world of Paris, Tilly returns to her hometown to try and reconcile with her mother Molly.
For the small town, Tilly’s return and eccentric city style—complete with fitted dresses and flashy high heel pumps—is an unwelcome shock.
Armed with her sewing machine and city attitude, Tilly vows to extract revenge on all those who had wronged her in the past and slowly reinvent the fashion scene of her hometown.
The film was released in 2015 and based on the novel of the same name by Rosalie Ham. It stars an academy-award winning cast with the likes of Kate Winslet as Tilly and Judy Davis as Molly, Tilly’s mother.
The film led the 5th AACTA Awards—the Australian equivalent of the Academy Awards—with thirteen nominations, including best film and best direction.
The film premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and went on to be screened at several prominent film festivals across North America and Australia.
The Dressmaker will be shown Oct. 13, for a 7 p.m. screening at the Chaba Theatre.
Tickets are $10 for non-members and $8 for Jasper Film Club members.
Memberships will be available at the theatre, Oct. 13, and cost $10.
The club’s November film and date will be announced later this season.
The club will also be hosting its annual general meeting Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Jasper Royal Canadian Legion. The club has several vacant positions that need to be filled.
